How To Become An Umpire

Now you can become an umpire! Know the rules! Watch top-flight bowls and get paid! Our goal is to have at least one umpire in every club in B.C.

The Umpire course is divided into two half day workshops with follow-up requirements:

umpire2

Part 1 –  CLASSROOM:

Candidates will be issued with the Bowls Canada Umpire Training Manual. The duties of the Umpire,
Points of play, Laws of the Sport and measuring equipment used by the Umpire will be discussed. At the end, a written test will be given.

Part 2 – MEASURING:

Candidates who pass the written test will be invited to participate in the Measuring Workshop. A series of tests must be successfully completed for advancement.

Part 3 – ACCREDITATION

All candidates must achieve Safe Sport certification and apprentice with an existing umpire over a minimum of two games before they can receive their accreditation as a Level 1 Umpire.

Level 1 umpires can officiate at the Provincial, District and Club levels, and may later pursue further accreditation.

Umpire Assessment Form

The Provincial Officiating Committee is giving you the opportunity to tell us about our umpires. All club games convenors are asked to complete the performance review online, which is available here: Officiating Performance Review Report.

If you have run or played in a tournament which had an official umpire, please take one minute and fill in this form. Tell us if you thought there were problems with the officiating. Tell us if the umpire was excellent. The POC will take your comments seriously and use them as part of our evaluation of the umpires in BC.
