This year Bowls Canada made the Senior Triples a national event instead of the regular Triples, and required all players to be 65+ by January 1st this year. While this meant some teams had to withdraw, it was a very successful tournament with 10 women’s teams and 7 men’s teams competing for honours over the June 26th-28th weekend.
The men’s tournament, hosted by Qualicum Beach, was a true round robin with every team playing every other team. The women’s tournament was hosted by the venerable Nanaimo club that has been active for over 100 years. The round robin phase for both men and women consisted of 6 games for every team over 2 days.
Because we had less than 12 teams entered, the playoffs did not include a quarter final. So, the top 4 men and top 4 women proceeded to the playoffs on Sunday. Playoff competition was fierce with all teams bringing their A games. The final results were:
Women
Gold: Gayle Waddell, Susan Metivier, Fanny Yeung
Silver: Annie Mathie, Jill Foster, Linda Turnbull
Bronze: Cherlynn McArthur, Kim Engelstad, Wendy Leamen
Men
Gold: David Baldwin, Jim Guszowaty, Bill Pattinson
Silver: Dennis Verge, Nick May, John Eyers
Bronze: Tony Morris, Charles MacIntyre, Ross Nakagawa
As usual, our thanks go out to the host clubs and convenors for running these tournaments so effectively and smoothly. The kitchen crews kept everyone well fed while the green crews gave us great bowling surfaces to play on. Lets not forget the umpires that put in long hours applying their expertise to ensure all games go by the rules, evenly and consistently.
A special shout out to Mikc Banks, the convenor at Qualicum Beach, who not only convened but also maintained the greens and stepped up as a substitute when one of the teams lost a player due to injury, which helped that team achieve the Bronze medal!
