It has been a slower than expected start for the two Canadians at the 2018 World Cup Indoor event at the Warilla Bowls Club in Australia but the tide is changing. Having both been there a couple of times now, their competitors know, not to take Pricilla and Hirendra lightly anymore. They have proven that they can compete with the best of the best on the International stage.

Having participated in the past two tournaments at Warilla and winning a Bronze Medal two years ago and last year winning the World Youth Championships, Westlake is familiar now to her opponents. Pricilla is sitting with a 2-2 record after just beating Norfolk Island, about an hour ago. She has had a tough start to round robin play as she has played both Scotland and returning uber Champ, Joe Edwards early in the draw. With a few more wins she should be able to make her way through to the playoffs.

Hiren has had a few struggles to start the tournament, heading over to get new Bowls hasn’t helped as his bowls were out of date and he had to borrow some size 3 bowls in Australia to start the tournament (usually playing with size 4). I was able to have a quick phone call with him today “a few adjustments along the way and I will start to pick it up. If I can run the table I should have a shot to make it through to the playoffs but I can’t drop to 4 losses”. he said. “But I am starting to feel better with these bowls and just have to play like I can”. He will have a few tests along with the way as today he has Turkey along with PNG and tomorrow morning he will have World Champ Ali Forsyth, which will be a big mountain to climb.

You can watch a replay of the game vs Turkey on Bowls BC Facebook Page

Both players are capable of bringing home some hardware for Canada if they can play their game, stay focused and get a few breaks along the way. As you know with lawn bowls, its always easier from the sidelines!

Best of luck to both players from everyone in BC as we will be cheering for you.
